I usually create a unified and complete black and white template sketch at this point but since this client knows how I work and that I’ll meet their deadline, we took a more relaxed improvisational approach. Partially finished diagrams with callouts and collage were emailed with various sarcastic cracks and suggestions back and forth.The final art is executed in Adobe Illustrator so that no quality is lost when used at various sizes. I have a long, ongoing relationship with the excellent in house design dept. at BART (and their Art Consultant). After trading a few jokes and insults by phone, I provided them with 3 color sketches via email. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the things that I learned in my ArtCenter core classes, which were really about teaching students the nuts-and-bolts essentials of their discipline. It is ultimately a way of seeing, one that’s related to reading in that it involves cumulative absorption and study. If you find yourself lost, one missing detail can snap everything back into focus. ArtCenter teaches you, quite simply, the fundamentals of seeing as it relates to drawing.
A lot of prestigious art schools don’t teach such seemingly rudimentary things. They assume the students have mastered this already, even if they haven’t. ArtCenter understands that one cannot paint a masterful portrait without first understanding the fundamentals. Seeing means truly understanding what you are looking at – and not only understanding it, but also interpreting it.

The layout below the deck seems slightly odd to me, but overall I felt like everything worked well. I loved the views from Osheehans, and all of the dining rooms felt redone except Versailles. On March 17, 2006 wildlife biologists for the Institute announced that for the first time in over 50 years there has been a successful hatching on Santa Cruz Island. In April 2007, the Nature Conservancy announced another successful chick hatching. The parents were one of the two nesting pairs who had returned to the island after making history the previous year. This second birth represented a turning point in the struggle to return the eagles to their former habitat on the island.

The island was used as a sheep ranch during the mid-1800s by the More family. Then during the cold war the United States Air Force maintained a radar base on the island. In the late 1970s Mobil Oil Corporation was granted exploration rights on the island. Finally, in 1980, Santa Rosa Island was included within Channel Islands National Park. By the early 1800’s the Chumash were said to have ‘voluntarily’ moved to the Santa Barbara and Santa Buenaventura missions.

On our Channel Islands whale watching cruise, there were three experiences that really stood out. At this point, I’ve been on almost a dozen different whale watching trips but each one is unique. Embark on a wildlife cruise around the Scilly Isles, exploring the rugged edges of the Eastern Isles, home to Atlantic grey seals and seabirds like gannets and puffins.

It is 21 nm long and is 4-1/2 nm across at its widest point, with a total area of 57 square miles. The U.S. Navy acquired the island in 1934 and it has been owned and operated by various naval commands. San Clemente is also home to an auxiliary naval airfield, United States Navy SEALs training facilities, and the southern end of the island is the Navy’s only remaining ship-to-shore live firing range. There are only three species of endemic land vertebrates on the island; the Island night lizard (Xantusia riversiana), deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus exterus), and island fox (Urocyon littoralis dickey).

Another company planned to build a platform on the bank and form a nation called ‘Taluga,’ but the US government declared that the bank was part of the continental shelf and was US territory. The wreck of the Abalonia today lies in three pieces in about 30 to 40 feet of water. Now, only scuba divers and the vibrant marine life are citizens of this almost-nation. Cortes Bank is a chain of underwater pinnacles and plateaus located 137 nautical miles (nm) South by Southeast from Santa Barbara and about 40 nm Southwest of San Clemente Island.
This is especially important as many endemic species of birds and reptiles use this native plant as cover and nesting habitat. DDT, a pesticide that was outlawed in 1972 wreaked havoc on California’s marine ecosystem and was especially consequential for the island’s native population of Bald eagles. DDT was absorbed by the birds’ major prey, fish, and then ingested by the eagles. It caused the eagles to lay eggs with weakened shells that cracked under the adults’ weight during incubation. DDT poisoning eventually extirpated the Bald eagle from California’s Channel Islands.
Like any other open ocean dive spot, you must be willing to roll the dice and see what Mother Nature will dish out. Traveling to the Channel Islands from the mainland is a distance ranging from 11 to 45 miles (one way) depending on where we depart from and where we go. We operate in US Waters and our vessels are inspected semi-annually by the United States Coast Guard.
In springtime, the island’s plants and flowers burst with stunning colors and bird life is plentiful. Visitors have an excellent chance to see the bright blue Island Scrub Jay, which is an endemic species found only on Santa Cruz Island. Other year-round endemic species frequently found when hiking this trail include the Santa Cruz Island Fox. Scorpion Anchorage offers some of the most varied trails, from family hikes to strenuous trails for the avid hiker. A guided hike by a volunteer National Park naturalist is offered on most day trips.
